Hull paint is a dark green metallic Awlgrip.
The composite construction method is referred to as "stitch and glue". Devlin has been the key innovator and exponent of this method of boatbuilding since the early 70s, and is widely recognized for his practice of a distinctly modern version of wooden boat building. In essence, marine plywood panels are precision cut and sutured together with wire "stitches" to form the hull and house. Seams are taped with fiberglass cloth and epoxy, the exterior is completely fiberglassed, and the interior sealed in epoxy. This creates a monocoque vessel that is lightweight, strong, and easy-to-maintain, yet demonstrates advantages long associated with wooden construction -- namely thermal and sound insulation. Needless to say -- this is not a quick and easy process. There are many, many labor hours required to build a boat like this. But the result is a beautiful display of craftsmanship that is a genuinely warm and comfortable boat to be aboard. And there are few boats as pretty.
Waterline Boats / Boatshed does not independently verify capacities and measures, which are reported from seller-provided information and/or literature.

No. of single berths | 2 |
Cabin(s) | 1 |
Handbasin | 1 |
Heads | 1 heads (Porta Potti) |
Boarding at the cockpit is easy -- bench seats port and starboard are at the right height for this purpose. The cockpit is quite large. in addition to the bench seats there are two single upholstered seats in the transom, with a fold-up table in between. Cockpit decking and the surface of the bench seats is faux teak. There are two watertight diamond plate deck hatches for storage, and two additional storage compartments in the stern. And a watertight diamond plate hatch forward of the engine where the batteries are located. A canvas winter cover encloses the cockpit entirely. Line storage is attractively provided by belaying pins on a rack on the cabin bulkhead.
Windows are from AJR. A nicely-finished hinged door accesses the cabin.
The main cabin is light and pretty, with Alaska Yellow Cedar planing overhead, teak and holly vinyl flooring, and many signature Devlin joinery features throughout. Two dark green Bentley captain's chair are a focal point and very comfortable. The starboard aft corner is a compact galley with integral Dometic sink / single-burner propane stove. Across to port is an Isotherm 4.6 cu-ft refrigerator. Cabin heat is from a Dickinson bulkhead-mounted propane cabin heater. Storage in the form of drawers and cabinets and shelves and accessible cubbies is surprisingly abundant. Two small hatches in the overhead add light and ventilation. The side windows slide open.
The forward cabin has two single berths in a vee, and a porta-potti. The hull sides are cushioned so this is a fine sitting area in addition to sleeping. An overhead hatch and four round portlights provide good light and ventilation.

Sam Devlin's Surf Scoter design is readily recognized in the northwest and they have migrated far beyond their home habitat. In a world of plastic boats they are distinctive and lovely and truly a species apart. While the original design was conceived two decades ago, with many boats subsequently built, this late-model Surf Scoter 23 enjoys many evolutionary advantages, including convenient, powerful and quiet outboard propulsion and the salty and practical reverse-raked forward windows.
Long an admirer of Devlin's work, this boat is a joy for me to represent. Her cuteness factor is sky high but so is her toughness and utility. And everyone who sees her remarks on the evident craftsmanship. This is a good day boat, with a large cockpit for entertaining and relaxing, and will serve a couple well as a small cruiser or overnighter too. And she makes a fine platform for fishing and is already equipped with an electric crab / shrimp pot puller.
I found her very maneuverable and surprisingly quiet and smooth. At idle in neutral I had to look to see if the engine was even running. The captain's seats are comfortable, the interior is well-ventilated and with great all-round visibility, and I could feel that this boat is as adept on the water as the surf scoter for which she's named.
Only a few years old, lovingly owned and moored on fresh water this boat really does appear "like new". And there are only 150 hours on the engine.
