Broker's Comments
If you’re looking for a central London home in a prestigious location and with a huge ‘wow factor’ this Thames Lighter barge could be the boat for you. This is possibly THE best mooring on the Thames, with amazing, uninterrupted views up- and downstream (and of the nature reserve, opposite the marina). In fact, this houseboat looks so good she has been used for location filming work.
Thames Lighters were the work horses of the Thames, unloading ships in the pool of London and taking their cargo upstream to be distributed to narrow boats which then further shipped the goods around the country on the canal system. The build date of this superb example is unknown, but is thought to be pre-1950.
With her vast interior and great outdoor space (rooftop terrace measuring 20’ x 15’ and with panoramic river views), this is a real ‘home’ rather than just another houseboat. Fabulous kitchen, master suite, bathrooms . . . the list goes on. She even has a private parking space, guest parking and a storage room ashore. The interior space is such that a third bedroom could be added.
The boat was dry docked in 2006 and, following a surveyor’s instructions, had a complete new 6 mm steel plate bottom put on her at a cost of £25,000; her sides are 12mm thick. A new oil boiler for the central heating and hot water was installed in 2006, along with a new 1,000 gallon integral steel oil tank.
With the cost of houses in this part of London reaching almost astronomical levels, this boat offers great value for such a big, high quality, living space.
